The word 'attar', is essentially an Arabic word meaning 'scent' Attars are popular throughout the Middle East and the Far East of India as well as Bangladesh and Pakistan. Attars have been used in the entire Eastern world for thousands of years. These all-natural perfumes are highly concentrated and therefore are usually offered for sale in small quantities and have traditionally been offered in decorated crystal cut type bottles or small jewelled decanters. Given its natural derivation, Attar lasts a long time. Body heat only intensifies its smell.

The history of natural attars is very much associated to the history of Kannauj. Kannauj has been known for natural attars from the Mughal period or even earlier when aroma bearing substances like Sandal, Musk, Comphor, Saffron were used as such and the range of such materials and essential oils were further enriched during the Mughal period, when new plants were brought by the Mughals from Central Asia to this country. This lead to the discovery and development of process for the preparation of attar from Roses by Noor jahan, the Mughal queen, that was the beginning of the natural attars in India, which developed and progressed in and around Kannauj and is quite strong even now.

The business was initiated by late Janab Jaan Mohammed and his son late Haji khuda Buksh in 1800 on a small scale .The raw materials were brought in from kanauj , ghazipur as well as Kolkata . Later in 1824 a shop was set up by Janab Haji Khuda Buksh under the said name and after his demise his son Janab Haji Nabi Buksh took over the business and escalated it to new heights. The business was expanded not only on a national level but also to overseas. Products were exported to Australia, middle-east countries, USA, England and Burma .after him the legacy was carried on by his successors namely - late Janab Haji Elahi buksh , late Janab Haji Qadir Buksh and late Janab Salauddin Allah Buksh. Currently brothers' Janab Neyazuddin Allah Buksh and Janab Shafiquddin Allah Buksh are actively involved in carrying on the traditional family business successfully.
